NEOCLASSICAL FRAMES & REANAISSANCE art

Renaissance art had watched to the infinite source of Roman antiquity. Renaissance artists searched for elements to build a new classical trend. So, Neoclassical frames were not the first in looking back to traditions. It was the second time that a trend looked at Greco-Roman culture.

Renaissance disappeared under the flow of Baroque art. In fact, the latter canceled most of its ideals. But after the discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Greek and Roman art returned. Artists put their energy and focus, back in time. Thus, the Neoclassical style frame was plenty of ancient decorations. The same used a long time before.

Also, the Neoclassical frames got inspiration from the Renaissance models. The masters of the 1500s had already gone through such a process. Therefore, Renaissance frames became models to copy as well. In short, Neoclassicism was a melting pot. Ancient traditions merged with more recent ones, forming a new style.

Due to the work of Winckelmann, Neoclassicism found its rules and its why. Winkelmann considered the classical traditions as the most relevant to pursue. He believed them to be the best ever existed. Therefore, the major artists got inspired by such ideals. With a solid theory as a base, Neoclassical picture frames followed precise rules. Even craftsmen now knew the path to catch.

The Grand Tour was another cause of spreading. Artists from all over Europe traveled to reach Rome. The Eternal Town was a real museum of traditions. The flow of intellectuals to Rome sped up the diffusion of Neoclassicism. Indeed, Neoclassical style frames became the new model to pursue.

Rome manifested Greco-Roman decorations all over. The architecture was in itself an example of classicism. Museums and churches were full of classical symbols. When travelers returned home, brought a piece of it in their mind.

France has been the most receptive country concerning it. French craftsmen realized astonishing Neoclassical frames. They started from the Italian models and went even further.

Moreover, Neoclassical frames prepared the path for the Empire style. The one which took off in France under Napoleon. But with the Empire art, classical traditions melted away. On one hand, Empire frames have been the continuity of Neoclassical style frames. On the other hand, they contributed to dissolving its ideals. In fact, the Empire movement is different.

1760 marked the end of the Rococo style. Since then, the Neoclassical ideals of symmetry overcame the exuberance of Rococo art. But Neoclassicism didn’t cover uniformly the past traditions.

First, Greece was for sure difficult to reach. Too far for the many. Too dangerous for others. Second, Rome, nearer and safer, contained the history of Greece. As a result, the Greek tradition was filtered by Roman culture. Romans had literally absorbed Greek art. They emphasized its magnificence. Also, they conserved its main meaning.

In conclusion, Rome can be considered a museum where the past is diligently conserved. When you walk through its antiquity, literally breathe centuries of art.
