Antique wood picture frame | Cod. 015
This is a reproduction of an Italian antique wood picture frame carved and gilded on lime. This early 17th-century antique hand carved frame is available in any size.
Structural properties of the wood antique picture frame
Antique wood picture frame made with lime and tulipwood. We use lime on the front side and tulipwood on the back side, obtaining strength and minimum weight at the same time. That is a great feature, to have a durable product, which can be handled easily because of its soft weight. Lime is not one of our lighter woods, which indeed is ayous, but still enough light to build a frame not too heavy. When it is a matter of wood hand carved picture frames it is one of our best choices.
Its structure is customizable as you prefer. For example, if you are looking for a profile abundantly deep, this could be a good start. In fact, this Baroque model can be modified easily in the back. Let’s say you have a painting 4 cm thick, it would be tough to find a frame enough deep to receive such a painting. In this case, we would add a good layer of wood on the back enough to cover all the needed depth. So remember that this reproduction of an antique wood picture frame is a good model for thick artwork. See below the main measures of its standard size.

Antique wood picture frame decorations
The handmade carving is the main feature of our most expensive frame in the category of late 17th-century Bolognese frames. We make this model entirely by observing the ancient techniques because the carvings are too big to be made with wood pulp. Even though wood pulp remains a crucial material to maintain the prices at a low level without losing in quality, in this specific model wood pulp would not apply properly. Wood pulp, indeed is good for smaller types of carvings. See below a video showing the master carver Massimiliano Gurrieri in action.
The video above shows how to realize the carving process of a wood antique picture frame that can be considered a masterpiece on its own. The realization of its carving alone can take up to 50 working hours for a medium-size frame. With that said, now you understand why it belongs to our expensive models, and why its value is so high. To realize this model we use rigorously legitim and ancient techniques as master carvers have done in the past.
Patina (aging process)
“Patina” is an Italian word that refers to how dark and old the frame looks. Apart from dark gold, the age of a frame is determined by a few cracks and tiny broken parts around the sides. For this purpose, our gilder hits its surfaces with stones and other tools like plastic hummers of different shapes. It consists of a very accurate procedure that has to be taken respecting pretty much in order several steps.
Also, the wormholes are simulated, and you can notice them by deeply analyzing the pictures above. Wormholes do not indicate activity within or a recent flight of beetles. Remember that as for the cracks, they have been faked to age a reproduction of an antique wooden frame.
Find below a video showing all the steps of the Patina.
