Cod. 01

Reproduction of an Italian antique picture frame carved, gilt, and decorated with punching technique on gesso. This Bolognese early 17th-century reverse Cassetta frame is available for any painting size. Therefore, you can fit it with any painting.

Structural properties

This reproduction frame is made with lime and tulipwood combined. We use lime for the front side and tulipwood for the backside of the frame. As a result, we obtain the maximum strength with the minimum weight.

You can customize the rabbet width as you prefer. For instance, if you need to cover a more significant part of the painting, you can ask to enlarge it. The rabbet depth, on the other hand, depends on the thickness of the painting. We will build the frame with the exact depth that you need.

Decorations

The carving is handmade, and it is on wood pulp. You can watch a video of this kind of carving process by following the link to our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/fTQHIH9dRC8
The decoration on the flat surface is also handmade. Our gilder uses a special kind of nail to realize the punching work.

The punching technique creates a fine decoration all around the four sides. Surprisingly, its shape will change as the light changes, quite frequently to tell the truth. You’ll be able to notice it just at earlier hours of the day with very well-marked ornamentations. On the other hand, during later hours of the day, you will hardly notice it. Watch a video of the technique on our YouTube channel.

Patina (aging process)

“Patina” is an Italian word that refers to how dark and old the frame looks. Apart from dark gold, the age of a frame is determined by a few cracks and tiny broken parts around the sides. For this purpose, our gilder hits its surfaces with stones.

Also, the wormholes are simulated; you can notice them by analyzing the pictures above. Wormholes do not indicate activity within or a recent flight of beetles. Remember that we faked them to age the frame.

See below a video showing all the steps of the Patina.
